May 8—11: Atlanta's Tennis Community

as The Discovery Point Classic was to end. A combination of volunteer burnout
and declining participation seemed to signal the end to this Gwinnett county tradition.
However, in 2003, a small group of tennis fans—with a heart for all that Children's
does—picked up the torch. In 2007, after only four years, The Classic—which

About The Discovery Point Tennis Classic
Now in its 19th year, The Classic is metro-Atlanta's oldest and largest amateur
charity tennis tournament that benefits Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Since
its founding in 1989, the tournament has raised more than $193,000 for Children's.
From its origins as one homeowner association's round-robin gathering of 62 players
on just 2 courts, the 2007 tournament grew to 330 players on 40 courts at 17 different
tennis facilities, attracting 167 corporate sponsors, and raising $47,000. Today,
The Classic—now presented by Discovery Point Child Development Centers—is
held in memory of Caroline Brown who, in 2004, required treatment using the extracorporeal
membrane oxygenation (ECMO) equipment that was purchased with funds raised from
the 2000 tournament. The Classic's 2008 fundraising goal is $60,000. Visit
