This tournament is dedicated "In Memory of Caroline Brown", daughter of Beth and
Jeff Brown of Steeplechase. In May of 2004, almost 2-year-old Caroline became ill with pneumonia.
As her condition worsened, she required life support treatment using the E.C.M.O. (Extracorporeal Membrane
Oxygenation) equipment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. E.C.M.O. is a sophisticated heart and lung
bypass machine that assumed Caroline's heart and lung functions, giving her organs a chance to heal during
her illness. Sadly, due to the severity of her illness and other complications, Caroline lost her
battle on May 26th, 2004.
Because of community fundraising such as this tournament, the FRIENDS organization was able to donate
money in the year 2000 toward the purchase of that equipment, which has helped the Browns and countless
other families, as well.
Caroline Brown was born on June 4th, 2002, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. Caroline is the first
child of Jeff and Beth Brown of Steeplechase. She was a welcome addition to her half brother and sister,
Wade and Victoria.
Caroline was much like her mother, in that SCHEDULE, ROUTINE, and FOOD were tops on the list for a
having a good day. She was up at 6:45 am, straight to the couch in the living room for "Bear in the
Big Blue House". That wouldn't last too long until she would sit up and start pointing to the kitchen,
asking for "Bottle!" That was only to hold her a little while, because she was ready for her real
breakfast then.
And speaking of breakfast, Caroline was the hit of the Rexall Grill in Duluth during her weekly visits.
After eating a whole adult breakfast order, Caroline would have to make sure everyone in the entire
restaurant 1) knew she was there and 2) was enjoying their meal.
Caroline was a good little shopper and spent many Friday's shopping for new clothes and toys, followed
by a great meal at Houston's (of course).
Caroline attended the Mothers Morning Out program at Horizon Christian School one day a week, and was
a member of the Toddlers Sunday School class at the First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville.
While Caroline is missed, she will always remain in our hearts. We know that through your generous
support of the Discovery Point Tennis Classic and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, others will
have the benefit of the equipment and supplies that your donations will provide.
